This is an excellent read for anyone serving in a responsible postion on a day-to-day basis whether their workplace is business, charitable, educational, religious or governmental. The writer gives practical and proven suggestions to improve one's effectiveness as a leader. These points of view apply to leaders at the top or those just starting up the ladder. After reading the book, I would recommend colleges change their courses of study from "management" to "leadership."
Common Sense Leadership Advice from Someone Who's Been There and Done That

Recently, I read Lloyd Lewan's book, "To Be A Leader". Dr. Lewan is Chairman of the Board and Executive Dean, of The Institute for Shipboard Education. He and his brother, Paul, run Lewan and Associates, the largest office technology company serving Colorado and Wyoming. He is also a keynote speaker on leadership, and workplace gender and diversity issues. Dr. Lewan begins by laying out some truths about today's workplaces: * World economies are coming together, but world peoples are not. * Loyalty between corporations and their worker, both ways, is decreasing. * Many workers are overwhelmed with the complexities of their lives. * More workers are overworked, yet underutilized. * Fewer workers come to work emotionally healthy and happy because of stress in their lives outside of work. With limited benefit dollars, the workplace struggles with how to help. * In settling disagreements and disputes, litigious procedures have replaced goodwill, good faith and good manners. Therefore, forgiveness and apology are less attractive strategies. All true, from my perspective. Then, Dr. Lewan goes on to explain why, we need leaders to deal with the complexities of modern organizational life. In Chapter 3, he says "Management is the science of business, leadership is the art of business. Both are important. Both are needed. But there is a difference. A business will never achieve results with a commitment to the people within it. Hence, leadership must go beyond management...Leadership is not management and vice versa. Leaders make sure management is in place; it is not generally the other way around." In Part II, Dr. Lewan really gets down to business. He discusses in detail what he sees as the three key components of leadership: vision, focus, influence. * Vision - To lead, you must be the number one believer in a realistic mission that can be embraced by your followers. Only then can you excite them to action. * Focus - To lead, you must keep followers focused on what is important to ensure that the job is done, that the mission is accomplished, or that the family is strong. * Influence - To lead, you must earn the trust of your followers through your sincere motive and consistent behavior. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 cover each of these in detail. Chapter 10 Ethics and Leadership covers one of the most pressing issues facing business today. After the Enron debacle, and the recent issues regarding backdating of stock options, the public has become increasingly skeptical of the integrity of business leaders. Dr. Lewan says: * "Although I want to refrain from preaching, ethics are critical. A person cannot live up to the expectations of leadership without ethics, which rest on character - honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, dependability, decency and so much more. The personal ethics of a leader guarantees a belief, a focus, and a motive that is trustworthy." I particularly like what he has to say on page 209 about graciousness - so
