This study presents the findings of the Swedish Secretariat for Futures Studies on the types of care available to people in society. Guidelines for policy making in areas such as welfare, health care, and employment are discussed, with the primary goal of organizing care services to respond most effectively to people's needs. Problems of various population groups, including children, the elderly, the disabled and immigrants are considered, using the case of Sweden as an example and comparing it with other countries. Extensive background information is accompanied by specific recommendations for care and welfare services in the future, and for the relationship between the care sector and society.
