Illustrated with a handful of black-and-white drawings, Time of the Thunderbird is a children's novel in the style of a Native American folklore, as told by award-winning author Diane Silvey (herself a member of the Sechelt Indian Band). Teenage twins Kaya and Tala seek to discover why the children from a village in British Columbia have vanished. Earth dwarves are being blamed for the disappearances, but Kaya and Tala are convinced they're innocent. In their quest to rescue the kidnapped children, they must pass a succession of tests, encountering mystical creatures ranging from a talking rock to a cedar ogre to Aixos, the most fierce of all sea serpents, and even the terrifying Thunderbird himself! Also highly recommended is Silvey's previous novel featuring Kaya and Tala, "Spirit Quest".
