Colorful and cute but not as entertaining as other Backyardigans titles

I've written many a rave review about Backyardigans books and DVDs so I immediately pounced on this book once I became aware of it. My five-year-old daughter loves the show as do my husband and I so we're using these board books to introduce it to our three-month-old. As with other books in the series, this one is very vividly colorful. I've read through the whole book twice with my son and he sits very quietly and stares at it. The colors are probably my favorite thing about the Backyardigans board books because they provide such nice visual stimulation for baby. I can see we'll get a lot of mileage out of this book as our son just sits and examines all of the bright colors in it. The theme of this book is nutrition and it introduces the five food groups. However, I didn't feel that it was as cleverly done as the concepts covered in some of the other board books. There's a very light plot here, as appropriate to a board book, but it's not as cute or engaging as the plots of other books in the series. This is still a book I would recommend, though. I think the writers for both the series and the books have a real talent for creating fun, engaging characters who very gently introduce concepts like manners and good nutrition without being preachy.
