Brockmann's unique time-travel romance

This book opens with a humdinger of a first line: "There was a naked man pounding on Maggie Winthrop's back door." Brockmann's hero has travelled through time not by some strange arrangement of fate or in order to meet the girl of his dreams. He met her, didn't win her, and seven years in the future she dies in his arms after saving his life from terrorists in the middle of stealing his time machine. Now Chuck (future guy) has travelled back to convince himself not to build a time machine and never get involved with terrorists who will use the machine to blow up the White House and incidentally kill Chuck, his friends, and the woman he loved but never won. This time around Maggie hasn't yet met Charlie (present guy) or married someone else. Chuck will have to convince Maggie and Charlie to achieve his goal, even though changing the future will erase Chuck. But the terrorists from the future know that Chuck will do anything to save Maggie, even preserve the time machine to go and save her again... If it sounds confusing, it is somewhat. In an interesting twist Chuck gains Charlie's new memories whenever anything new happens to Charlie, lending strength to Chuck's arguments that they are the same man. There is still plenty of poignancy to the question of which man does Maggie really love. This is a book not to miss if you have any interest in romance or time travelling.

Great little romance packed with a good story line...

You know I really enjoyed this one. It's an oldie but a goodie to me and one that I really recommend. I normally don't read time travel romances but I am glad I gave this one a chance. Chuck has invented a time travel capsule and has travelled into the past hoping to change the event that took place and save the life of his sweetheart who was killed during a "take over." Chuck lands in Maggie's backyard naked. Boy, is that hard to explain. Though he is ten years ahead of the time he is still great looking and Maggie hasn't met the young Chuck yet. The older Chuck has to convince Maggie to convince the younger Chuck not to invent the time capsule to keep from landing in wrong hands that plan on controling the world with it. Romance is mixed with science fiction. A great little read!

Great book

If you know someone who's skeptical about how much good writing could be packed into "those little books," give him or her this one. This is simply one of the best short romances I've ever read. Fans of Connie Willis and similar speculative SF authors will love it as well. Nominated for the prestigious RITA award.
