This book is a quick, enjoyable to read, but lacking in substance. If you don't know anything about air operations in the China-Burma-India theater (CBI) or the "Flying Tigers" (American Volunteer Group), and don't want to become mired in statistics or detailed descriptions of specific combat sorties or the biographies of individual pilots or commanders, this book is good enough. However, the author clearly has a love affair with Claire Chennault and Greg Boyington. He seems to have used Chennault's and Boyington's autobiographies as the basis for this book. Strangely, the author really neglects any detailed discussion on the specific squadrons of the AVG. Given the title, it seemed the book would be about the men who flew the missions, not the failed, former Air Corps officer who hired them.
