Forget Fundamentals, Love the Trip

Not a traditional Buddhist or Yoga teaching, but an insightful, challenging little book that opens up the mind. Delightful on many levels.

Inspiration for the Spiritual Trip

Tibetan Power Yoga by Jutta Mattausch fits into the expanding modality of spiritual story books whose message and essence are rooted in the authors' deepest perceptions rather than in their surface stories. These books often do not portray the popularly established fundamentals of particular traditions in the accepted public pigeonholes where every reader feels comfortable. But their purpose is to awaken in particularly aware readers a feeling of enlightened inspiration and to suggest a pathway on which an independent spiritual seeker might trod. Tibetan Power Yoga does just this. Ms. Mattausch tells a tale here of connecting with a Tibetan lama who, over time, opens her awareness and provides valuable life guidance. His direction to her is to practice the basic Buddhist prostration, a challenge to find the sublime in an ordinary everyday exercise. As she progresses, he drops in many little teachings along the way. The author reports on both the everyday reality and altered states of her trip in order to project the various realities any seeker faces on the spiritual path. The story flows and ends with effective touches of poignancy. Many in the West today are deeply concerned with the current plight of Tibet and its ancient culture, and there is much emphasis on the writings of current Buddhist leaders and on translations of ancient manuscripts. If we are to rise to the full challenge of the spiritual trip that lies at the heart of this ancient culture's traditions, we must value stories that awaken the inspiration for such a trip. This book offers that inspiration.

Good introduction to enhancing the human energy field.

Although certainly not a literary masterpiece, it offers a nice introduction to the exercise of "prostration," a Tibetan form of concise yoga. Also includes some excellent breathing exercises. Limited Buddhist philosophy. The story, though sparsely written, grows on you, and there are some nice nuggets of wisdom within.
