A PRETTY NICE READ

THIS IS THE STORY OF FORMER YANKEE GREAT, THURMAN MUNSON. I FOUND THIS BOOK TO BOTH ENTERTAINING AND INTERESTING. MUNSON WAS ONE OF THE BEST CATCHERS OF HIS DAY. HE WAS A HARD WORKER AND A REAL TOUGH NOSE. I WAS VERY SAD AND SHOCKED WHEN I HEARD OF HIS DEATH IN 1979. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS WHO WANT TO SEE WHAT HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION CAN ACCOMPLISH. I THINK THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS FINE BOOK IS HIS RELATIONSHIPS WITH MARTIN, JACKSON AND THE BOSS. WORTH YOUR TIME.

Now batting .. the catcher .. number 15 ..

Thurman Munson's autobiography was published in 1978. My "Memorial Edition", with an epilogue by co-writer Martin Appel, appeared in 1979 after Munson's death.Munson's voice is unassuming and honest. His hard work and perseverance began before high school in Akron Ohio, and continued through Kent State University and his 11 seasons with the New York Yankees.I was 12 when Munson won the 1970 American League Rookie of the Year Award. He quickly became the Yankees' heart and soul, their rock and captain. Munson discusses his relationships with Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, and others on that colorful team. He also writes about his rivalries with Johnny Bench and Carlton Fisk. You can look up Munson's stats (e.g., 25 hits and .373 batting average in 16 World Series games), but they don't tell the whole story. In his book, he comes across as straightforward and strong, devoted to his family and teammates, a leader by example. This one is worth seeking out, especially for Yankee fans of my generation who grew up watching Thurman direct traffic behind the plate.
