It is important to note that this book is an adaptation of the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. Purists may shun it for that reason, but the primary change is the removal of the white butterfly, which is hardly an essential plot element and whose unknown fate in Andersen's story could be needlessly upsetting to small children. Anyone who just wants the original text of the story (or as close as it can be for a translation) would probably be better off looking for a single book that has all of Andersen's fairy tales. But Robyn Officer's charming illustrations are the best that I have ever seen for the story of Thumbelina, and it is worth purchasing the book just for the artwork.
