Rapunzel Themed Romantic Suspense

This is an earlier Kay Hooper from her romance days. In it, Lara plays the role of Rapunzel in a community theater production. The prince, played by Devon, falls for Lara, but their romance is complicated by a threat from Lara's past. She's under the witness protection program and Devon is involved somehow, but she must determine if he's a bad guy trying to gain her confidence or the hero riding to the rescue. Lara devises a plot to flush out the would-be killer that is worthy of a Mary Higgins Clark novel. Unfortunately the mysterious cartel and their intent and Lara's scheme get pretty convoluted and it just barely holds together. The steamy romance scenes keep the book moving steadily along. Her intuitive, almost-talking cat reminds me of Elsie Lee's Star of Danger. Worth a read.

Good romance

This is a great author and her romance writing is very enjoyable. However, her paranormal stories are outstanding and this come no where near the quality of the mysteries and paranormal themes.

VERY ENTERTAINING, PLEASANT LISTENING

A blend of romance and suspense often makes for good reading and terrific book sales. No one knows this better than bestselling author Kay Hooper (Hunting Fear; Touching Evil; Once A Thief, Always A Thief). The plot is typical Hooper - what sold this listener was the vocal performance of Staci Snell. Texas born and now Los Angeles based Snell has memorable TV appearances to her credit as well audio book narrations - favorites of mine are the Sandra Brown novels, especially Demon Rumm. She has a distinct voice, clear with careful articulation and an almost imperceptible tremor when suspense mounts. All of this makes for very entertaining, pleasant listening. Golden Threads was first published in book form in 1989, so it may not be new to Hooper fans but the audio version enriches the romantic tension between Lara Callahan and Devon Shane as well as the forthcoming danger to them both. As some may remember Lara has come to the small community of Pinewood seeking anonymity and a fresh start. Devon's reasons for being there are quite different yet equally compelling. The two are cast in a community theater production, thus setting the stage for amour and adventure. - Gail Cooke

Not what she normally writes, but pretty good!

Golden Threads is a quick read, and also a good read. The book turns out to be a page turner, you care about the characters - you want to know what happens to them. It is nothing like the books she writes currently, such as the other "new" book out "Sleeping with Fear." I think some Hooper fans would be disappointed in that. She explains on the DJ flap that it is a earlier novel that is more romance than mystery and suspense, but it definitely has a mystery in it. I thought it is worthy of reading. The only thing I found somewhat annoying was the overwrought way the two characters reacted to one another. Cat lovers should know that a super smart siamese plays a big part in this novel!
