Thoroughly engaging and insightful

This book is exactly what the title sets it out to be, a look at the Bible to find God's perspective on women in the Bible. What it is not is a topical study on women and how women should be and what a good woman is and how great women are, etc. It is simply several compelling stories and teachings from the lives of women as told in the Bible. Barrs is more concerned with getting their story right than making their story "applicable" to today. And for that, the book is benefited. Read this for strong Biblical perspective on women, for great writing, great textual teaching, for though-provoking truths about the role of women in the Bible. Do not read it for fluffy-puffy Chicken Soup For the Woman's Soul.

A delightful and insightful book.

Subtitled "God's Perspective on Women in The Bible", Through His Eyes (THE from henceforth) is a very interesting book. If the reader is expecting to get another perspective on Biblical roles for women, he will be surprised. It was a pleasant surprise for me. Barrs looks at a large number of women in the Bible, takes the Biblical data concerning them, the background and customs of the times, and shows many interesting and important things about them. This is a well written book. It is filled with mini biographies of Biblical women. These biographies do not cover up their faults. THE has a way of finding much good even in the "bad girls" of the Bible. No, he doesn't seem to practice eisegisis, but practical exegisis and finds much more good than we are accustomed to considering. In a day when traditional, Biblical roles of men and women are called into question due to chauvinistic attitudes, this book is a breath of fresh air. THE shows that women are indeed considered valuable and of great worth in the eyes of God. Of course, this means that we should think the same way. If I had one criticism, I think it would be the fact that the book is quite long. It would have probably served Barrs' cause more to have cut the length of the book in half and produced a sequel. That is a subjective opinion, but I imagine that many who look for the subject material to be treated as THE treats it would opt for that. Perhaps not. This book was a delightful read and will find a place of honor in many libraries to be used as a reference on Biblical women.
