Threadbear will amuse kids but flatten adults

Threadbear is the enigmatic story of a teddybear rescued and nursed back to health by an elderly man. As he heals, Threadbear grows to know the other bears in the old man's house - some missing an ear, some an eye - which the old man deftly repairs. But it's the scars that are unseen, the pain of abandonment, the confusion of being owned by a child who loves them when he's happy and hits them when he's angry that haunts the little bears. Gradually they share experiences, their pain beginning to fade as their understanding grows. Like any good therapist, the old man (God?) shares of himself - he too was a "batterer", though his pain and guilt linger. He takes care to explain that his own bears owned none of the fault for their own abuse - that he hit them when HE was tired or angry; that the blame was his alone. "I hurt my friends," he confesses, "And I'm sorry." In the end the bears heal and become joyous and leave the old man's care, to be nurtured and loved by a delightlful little girl. Threadbear however, remains, to continue his healing and that of the old man..."we had so much more to say to each other." Youngsters may find this story too nuanced to enjoy. Adults or older children with abandonment issues should approach this book only with a full tissue box - if you're the least bit sensitive or empathic, this book can reduce you to rubble in five minutes. It's a shame the there are kids and adults alike who've shared the trauma of the teddybears in this wonderful book. But a read through Gallaz' most touching story will start the process of healing in a most gentle way.
