laid a trap for members of the public. He set up a fake

experiment and invited members of the public - carefully

prescreened in the event - to participate.

Stanley Milgram2 did what he could to make sure he

had screened out psychopathic tendencies. Nevertheless

within weeks he had discovered that all it takes to make

the difference between getting you to torture another individual,

possibly to death, and not doing so is a set of

variations in the environment around you
