Haunting and beautifully written

I picked this book up at a Christian camp for lack of something to read and couldn't put it down again. The story was sorrowful--some might say depressing--but there was a beauty and thoughtfulness to the writing that made me feel like I really entered into the story. I homeschool and follow Bauer's Story of the World and Well Trained Mind, but this book made me wish she wrote more fiction. Truly well written.

Another Gripping Page-Turner by Susan Wise Bauer!!

I must admit up front that I selected this book to read because I am using SWB's book The Well-Trained Mind as the guide for the classical education of my children. I would say that I am fairly well read and read approximately 1-2 books per week. I was intrigued by the title and thought, well, it would be interesting to see what kind of author this person was who I was using as the primary resource for my children's education.I have to tell you that I could not put the book down. I read it nearly all night after I picked it up from the bookstore. I got a few hours of sleep (I stopped only because I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer) and I continued to read it, bleary-eyed, the next day until I finished it.I honestly have to say that I can't remember the last novel that I have read that had such well developed characters in it. Susan brought these people to life, warts and all. The main character, Amanda, was amazingly real as was her husband. This could have been a true story. The ending was not neat and tidy, but totally realistic.I found the book to be thought-provoking. Susan manages to prod the reader into thinking about ALL of the reasons behind a person's (character's)actions. This is a useful exercise in the real world as well. This is a truly well written book.I am looking forward to reading The Revolt, which I have on order. If it is HALF as good as Though the Darkness Hide Thee and The Well-Trained Mind I know I won't be getting much sleep until I have devoured it!
