Good resource for the price

Great dictionary... my two girls (2nd & 4th graders) love using it for homework and to famliarize themselves with everyday words. Very easy to read and uses each word in a sentence after the definition; book also has nice pictures and is not overcome by them as with other dictionaries. Overall, a good investment in my childrens' education and future.

Thorough, colorful and fun to read

I purchased this dictionary to replace the Scholastic Children's Dictionary that often did not have most of the words my 5th grader needed to look up for school. Adult dictionaries had the words but were intimidating and the definitions typically did not help her understand the word. When we got this one, I had to remind her that she was looking something up, because she found it interesting just to browse. Thorndike Barnhart Intermediate Dictionary has almost everything we've looked up so far, with an easy to understand definition and often one or more examples that further illustrate the meaning. Numerous illustrations pepper the layout as do word and synonym studies that encourage further browsing. The 62 page reference section appears useful but is slightly outdated (1997 edition). It includes: writer's handbook, writer's thesaurus, mini-atlas, United States States facts, U.S. Presidents up to Clinton, U.S. and world time lines to 1995, geologic time line, mathematical formulas, solar system, human skeleton, food pyramid, solar system, periodic table and glossary of literary and poetry terms. In addition, 13 mostly 2-page spreads in the alphabetical section have more details on topics including the atmosphere, knights and castles, painting, and space to name a few. This dictionary is similar to Thorndike-Barnhart Junior dictionary which received several excellent reviews but was out of stock when I ordered.
