This novel is set around 1300 A.D. in England. The author does a good job of giving a sense of the period without becoming tedious with details. I enjoyed the book although at times I seems almost like a fantasy book rather than a historical novel because the gay characters seem so unconflicted concerning their sexuality. The story is told through the eyes of the different main characters, and this slows things down a bit. Nevertheless, I would recommend it for lovers of gay historical fiction. Having only read the disappointing "The Bisley Boy" from this author, I was pleasantly surprised. Not the best in this genre, but certainly not the worst.
