Dr. Peter Mannsfeld, a German Balt, spent his early childhood in Riga, Latvia. In 1940 his family was forced to flee to Germany before the Russian invasion. Finding themselves trapped in what would ultimately become East Germany, the Mannsfelds survived as anti-communist refugees. Using a combination of intelligence, perseverance, and courage, Peter set about overcoming the oppression of the Hitler and Stalin regimes, determined to educate himself as a chemist. In 1964, after many years of struggling to get his doctorate in chemistry, Peter found work as an assistant superintendent at Degussa Corporation in Cologne, Germany. As a result of his successes gained through ingenuity and a somewhat maverick style of management, he quickly rose through the ranks, ultimately receiving the assignment of opening a new Degussa plant in the United States. Mannsfeld was named President of Degussa Alabama in 1973 and Vice President of Engineering for all Degussa plants in the United States in 1977. His innovations at the Degussa facility in Theodore, Alabama gained global recognition throughout the manufacturing industry. Because of his example, foreign interests such as Mercedes were convinced they could operate profitably in the southern United States, a region once avoided due to corrupt politics and obstructive union organizations.
