Carl G. Ferrel's poems give insight into a deeper life as he presents poems about love, friendship, nature, social issues and family. In the first poem "Why Am I Here?" he answers the question we all ask and does so with a profound understanding of what it means to be alive and walking the earth with purpose. "It is time; To rise above the ashes, Like a Phoneix to the sky. To spread the words of wisdom, To people near and far. To right the wrongs of evil, And let goodness rule the land. It is time to work together, To preserve this world so grand." In "It Is Time" Carl G. Ferrel urges us all on to greatness and this poem revisits the meaning of the first poem and readdresses a theme that seems to consistently reappear throughout this work. "Think" speaks of a wisdom gained through experience as the poet remembers his youth and contemplates the future of the world. Visions of beauty appear as the scent of orange blossom in a poem about a woman who wore a beautiful perfume. Some of the poems paint nature images like in "Rose" and "Volcano." Memories of Christmas mingle together in a series of poems and many of the poems seem to embody the true spirit of Christmas. Carl G. Ferrel has created a warm escape into contemplations about the world and how we should spend more time thinking about our future so we won't wonder why things happen the way they might if we don't. ~The Rebecca Review
Poems that tug gently but firmly at your emotions
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
The author has been involved in a wide variety of occupations and it shows in the breadth of his writing. The two most interesting occupations were "septic surgeon" and his membership in the local laborer's union. They were interesting to me because I have also worked in both these areas. While the poems do not give you a literal punch to the emotional gut, they do tug at the most sensitive aspects of your emotions. He writes about general aspects of humanity as well as down to the most basic feelings of loneliness. His poem on page 82, titled "Stranger" is an exposition of the feelings of being out of place that all of us experience at some times in our life. It was my favorite in the collection; I read it three times as I was going through the book.
Wisdom of the Heartland

What caught my eye when I first scanned this book was that the poet was a member of the Laborer's Union. This gave me hope that the poetry would reflect a life truly lived and not just that of an academic copying a style. I wasn't disappointed. Poem after poem spoke of a simple and direct life lived close to the land- lived and then pondered upon in solitude. I could be wrong here, but a reoccurring theme of a sense of impending disaster jumped out at me from such selections as Avalanche, Volcano, Comet, The Coming Storm... It was a sense that nature had been pushed too far by people who had strayed too far. The poet was the solitary witness of this. And yet, it is also a volume that speaks of the simple and the good in life. It is a remembrance of the traditional. It is this that gives the collection its sense of hope. Or is it a sense of prophecy? For when nature does finally push back, and the shallow and greedy and selfish are swept aside by the flood, it will be from the Heartland that things are renewed and restored. It is still the Heartland where the roots run deep and the simple and good and true endure.
WHAT A PLEASING COLLECTION.

What a wonderful small volume of poetry. This particular work is well named, i.e. "Think." as that is just what these wonderful little poems do. They do cause you to think. The thoughts expressed in this volume so well by C.G. Ferrel, are thoughts that most of us have from time to time. What is different is that the author is able to articulate these thoughts in a manner that is clear, concise and wonderfully simple. There are no wasted words here, no pretences...the man has something to say and he says it, and says it quite well. No hidden allegory to fret over, no obscure words that set you to running for the dictionary, just words, wonderfully woven together to cause you to....well, think! I do normally hate to use the word "inspirational" overly much, but in this case it works best. Each of these little works are indeed sparks of inspiration and their nature is that each time they are read, new meaning, related to our everyday lives, can be found. This is the kind of book I like stashed by my reading chair and in quite moments, just flip to any page and simply enjoy. I actually read some of these poems to a high school senior literature class recently. Normally, the word "poem" causes eyes to glaze over and a coma type state to set in. The young men and women of the class actually enjoyed this work. It is a shame that poetry and poetry books, in general, are not in vogue as much any more as we are missing a lot. I suspect that this particular work will not get the wide spread attention is deserves and that is truly a shame. Recommend this one highly. I truly feel you will not be sorry to add this one to your collection.
