A Must Read!

Thin Fire should grace every lesbian's bookshelf. I echo the sentiment that Nanci Little should be known for the talented writer she is. (I would add I wish she were more prolific.) Her characters are vivid, larger than life women I think we all seek when we reach for fiction. Interesting dialogue, good romance and great storytelling make this a book I read at least once a year.

An amazing book

This is a beautiful book about coming of age, learning not to be afraid, and finding the courage to let another person into your heart. The author captures exactly what it feels like to know when you've met "the one", as well as what it feels like when you think you've lost her forever. It amazes me that more people haven't heard of this book, and that Nanci Little isn't more well known. Out of print, but definitely worth looking for.

A gotta read book!!!

I'd love to see this book come back out in print,it's high on my very favorite books list. This was the first book I have read by Nanci Little, and I have to say I'll be back to read more of her books!!

A feeling, thinking novel that will stay with you for months

Nanci Little's THIN FIRE is an extraordinarily fine book, filled with memorable, affecting characters and scenes. This novel will make you laugh, cry, cheer, and think. Most of all, it will make you feel. // I've read this book over and over, because I enjoy it so much, and because I find more to treasure each time through. // There are many themes here, but every one is given a rich and complex treatment. Just a few examples: lesbian self-discovery/coming out, rape & its aftermath, anti-gay violence, misogyny, the joy of learning, the beauty of nature, the Army, leadership, friendship, risk, trust, and love. Most of all love. By the end of this book, you will feel blessed to have met its women. // And to top it all off: (1) This book has one of the best first lines I've ever read - it totally hooks you from the first second, even though you may not have a clue what it means until the second page. (2) There's a gym weight room scene that is worth the price of admission, all by itself! This absolutely dead-on-perfect scene will have all women cheering.... You'll only wish you could see it happen in real life! All in all, this is a superb book. // (My only complaint about THIN FIRE? The book ends.)

Excellent Lesbian Novel

I had previously read "The Grass Widow" by Nanci Little, which led me to "Thin Fire." I was not disappointed. Ms. Little definitely comes through for her readers. She writes in a clear and direct manner that is quite readable. I found myself not wanting to put this one down. The characters are well drawn, and individualistic. The setting is primarily a U.S. military base. The story revolves around Elen McNally, a young, tough woman who enlists in the Army. At the beginning of the book, Elen believes herself to be a heterosexual woman She forms a tight, connected friendship with Nikki a self-acknowledged lesbian Elen's heterosexuality gets an unexpected, jolting challenge not only in her love for Nikki, but when Elen is brutally sodomized by a male soldier. Thus begins Elen's journey into her true self, ultimately leding her into an affair with a female Colonel named Kare. Elen and Kare are deeply in love but they also have conflicts--one being Kare's military career which keeps her closeted,, the other being the fact the rape has made Elen into a stone butch. The inner journeys of these two women, and the decisions they make are excellently handled by Ms. Little.
