This memoir is a hybrid work because it combines my life story before prison in the form of daily chapters, my daily life in prison in the form of journal entries, and my attempts to stay connected to my loved ones in the form of artwork like drawings and cards. Beyond the environment, the schedules and the pain that comes with prison, most importantly, this memoir showcases my struggle with addiction and how I overcame all of its emotional, mental and physical obstacles. Before I went to prison, my fiance Lena, made me promise to write her every day. Part of it was for me, so I could see how I could grow and change over time, and part of this was for Lena, if she was going to stay with me through this difficult time, raise our daughter by herself, and survive this struggle, she needed to know I was dedicated to her and our future. And so They Called Me Nemo: A Story of Addiction, Love and Redemption was born.
