Book Overview

The first novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club is a rollicking tale of small-town peculiarity, dark secrets, and one extraordinary beauty pageant. When her husband is offered a post at a small university, Maye is only too happy to pack up and leave the relentless Phoenix heat for the lush green quietude of Spaulding, Washington. While she loves the odd little town, there is one thing she didn't...

Slightly Disappointed

This is a novel but I found it lacking in Notaro's customary humor.

A book for the real girls in the crowd.

I have enjoyed Laurie Notaro's writing for years now. Every "Idiot Girl" I meet gets a copy of her first book from me. We gals may watch Sex and the City and dream of being one of the coveted 4 but when I read her first book I knew I had found the voice that speaks to how it really is. I want to be glamorous and live in a penthouse in New York but in reality I have my body girdle cinching in the fat to keep buttons from flying off while in a meeting. "There's a Slight Chance.." give us the first fiction novel from Notaro. Everything genuine in her non-fiction tales is just as heartfelt and honest. With vivid characters and a lively setting, it sucks you in from the get go. To be completely honest it took me more than 3 months to read the book because I knew once finished, I would not have another new book from Notaro for a while. So, chapters are read with careful thought to make this gem last as long as possible. Don't be fooled, her writing is sharp and truthful but if your the girl who is prone to spilling her drink on her white blouse while wearing a girdle that can now been seen through the damp fabric that's clinging to your chest as you realize your wearing the uncomfortable bra and using a post it and some napkins to cover the mess while addressing your boss, then Laurie is the writer for you.

You will NOT be disappointed

Ms. Notaro's first work of fiction is a hit! A great summer read. Fans of her earlier works will see a little bit of the author in the main character of the book, Maye Roberts, a lonely transplant to the tiny town of Spaulding, Washington. You will laugh out loud at Maye's antics on her quest to make a friend in this tight knit community with a secret in its past. I loved this book, and I think you will, too.

This is one funny woman

Once again, Laurie Notaro makes us laugh to the point of incontinence. This is her first work of fiction, and hopefully won't be her last. Her non-fiction work is well-known to millions, and this book will not disappoint those loyal fans. You'll laugh, you'll cry from laughing, you'll recommend this book to your friends.

Great book!

I picked up the mail at noon and now 9 hours later have to say it was a wonderful read! Beware of eating or drinking while reading. There should be a hazardous warning on this book "Warning: Eating or Drinking while reading this book may cause laughter induced splats on your pages!" The laughter starts on the first page and carries you through to the end. Next please!!

Slam Dunk Home Run Again for Notaro!

Once again Laurie Notaro hit's a home run and grabs a slam dunk all at the same time! In her first novel she entertains us with saying things that most of us only think! She paints a picture of the crazy and wacky things that happen in our lives that we are afraid to tell anyone else about! I do have to say if you are a bit shy about laughing until you cry in public you might not want to read this book while on public transportation! Keep them coming Laurie you know there are those of us who live our lifes just to read the next book!
