Excellent view from the Confederate angle.

Although written in 1970, this stands as one of the best books I've seen on the Civil War as seen from the South. We've all seen countless books dealing with the various battles, and they're covered here as well, but it's rare to get behind the scenes of the Southern Government. It is facinating to see how they tried to forge the very independent minded southern states into a true nation, get international recognition, and field masive armies, all while fighting one of the strongest powers in the world. Special care is given to Jefferson Davis, the President of the young nation, doing his best to juggle the ego's of Generals, Governors, and Senators. I think many people look at the Southern cause being represented by R.E. Lee and the Army of Norhtern Virginia, this book shows a lot more to the story. The pacing of the book is spot on, this is a great overview on the "lost cause", and very, very readable.

Essential reading for anyone interested in Southern history

Vandiver has authored many memorable books on Confederate and Civil War history. THEIR TATTERED FLAGS is a must is you are interested in the epic of the Confederacy. The author provides insight to Southern actions and thought that is not possible for less gifted writers, especially those who have not lived in the South. Read and enjoy!
