Undiscovered Gem

This book is an anthology of tales, parables and fables by the very talented author (and cult icon), Spencer Holst. The stories are sharp, biting and lucid. Spencer Holst has a style reminiscent of some of the classical philosophers and storytellers -- Plato, Aristotle and Aesop all come to mind as I read these stories. Holst is incredibly concise. He consistently conveys his message in two pages or less, each time with dry, and often sarcastic, humor. He has the rare ability to make every word count. In "The Zebra Storyteller", Holst sums up, in a page and a half, the therapeutic role of fiction in individual lives and society. Aristotle expressed the same idea in one or two of his treastises. But Holst's rendering of this theme is more effective and far more enjoyable to read. All the stories in this volume are very good; many are outstanding. These are stories which linger in one's memory. I am amazed that Holst remains largely unknown. Such talent deserves greater recognition.
