Trust Me; You Don't Want to Meet Up with These Guys!

Part of 'The World's Top Tens' series published by Capstone Press, Nick Healey's THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS BUGS introduce readers 9-12 to some pretty deadly little creepy-crawlies. Reader beware: If you were vaguely afraid of insects prior to reading Healey's book, you're gonna like 'em even less after you finish THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS BUGS! Using a reverse countdown format, Healey examines ten dangerous bugs. Each bug gets a two-page write-up with at least one color photograph, most being extreme close-ups. He described what they look like, where they can be found, their M.O., the damage they do to human beings, etc. Many of the 'usual suspects' made Healey's list: Black Window Spiders, Scorpions, Tsetse Fly, the Brown Recluse Spider, Deer Tick, Mosquito and Africanized Bee. Others such as the Human Bot Fly, Puss Caterpillar and Kissing Bug were new to me. (You'll have to read the book to find out which bug rated #1)! Looking at the up-close-and-personal photographs of the bugs, it's amazing that something so small could be so deadly. (One photograph showing the damage done to a human arm by a Brown Recluse Spider bit might be upsetting for younger readers). Readers 9-12 with an interest in bugs - and their parents - might enjoy Healey's book and find it useful as well. It's a basic, nicely-illustrated guide to some tiny little critters with nasty bites that's both informative and educational. Recommended.
