Beautiful!

I purchased this book in the store, for both the lovely illustrations and for the beauty of the prose. As a twenty-year-old Junior in college I adored the complexity of some of the verses. Yet, when I gave the book to my siblings, who are twelve, ten, and seven years old respectively, they enjoyed it equally, as did my mother. This book effectively teaches on the value of words, and the repercussions of them. It drew parallels in my mind about the parable of the Sower and the seeds. Perdita Goodenow is a powerful new voice in children's literature, and her story is divinely touched. I would recommend it for children and adults alike.

The Word Garden

The book is an excellent book for ages birth to 100 and beyond. It is a wonderful baby gift, a great birthday present for young children, and a perfect Mother's Day gift. It works well to come from the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus, and I have given it to my friends as a "grandmother" present to keep at home and read to their grandchildren. It is a book that should be in every kindergarten and elementary room/library and every church/Sunday School room. Additionally, it is a great gift for any reason.... because the lessons in it are profound for any age. This book teaches everyone, adults and children alike, to speak kindly with compassion at all times and to speak in love and forgiveness. I have given away over 36 of these books and I am working on giving away my 4th dozen. I love the illustrations, and Mrs. Goodenow is extremely talented artistically and verbally. I highly recommend The Word Garden to everyone.

Great Teaching Tool

Recently a customer who was perusing the children's section of our garden store, purchased this book, a book about friendship. She was interested in discovering ways to assist her son in his need to broaden his sharing and caring skills. Two weeks later the same mother returned to our store to relay to our staff that this book had become a great teaching tool for her family. Her son, in particular, was actively using the wisdom of this book which, of course, would delight any parent. Our "hats are off" to Perdita Goodenow, the author, for creating such an unique and helpful piece of children's literature.

Great teaching tool!

My 3 1/2 year old daughter and I had only read this book a couple times when she began applying the principles for herself that are so wonderfully presented in this book. She enjoyed the illustrations and the story, but when she had a disagreement with another 3 year old friend that lead to hurtful words, I was amazed that she recognized that she had "planted a weed" in her friend's heart. We then referred back to the book and she asked for forgiveness and "planted a flower!". It was such a beautiful experience to see her grasp such a difficult concept on her own. Now we practically use the terminology from this beautiful book on a DAILY basis to teach our daughter to use kind words, and how our words affect those around us. I highly recommend this book!!
