Futuristic setting...old legend renewed...a dusting of magic

During a neuclear war, the world was brought down to ruins and radiation thick deserts on a day that came to be known as the Devistation. The only unmutated, civilized survivors live in Britian (England was only nuked onec, in London). 500 years later, these survivors have re-estableshed some sense of civilization, hope returning as the neulcear winter begins to thaw, and the long darkened sky begins to clear. But the people are divided into small earldoms, constantly fighting amongst each other. The children of the more fortunate famalies are sent to Landolen, a private boarding school. When two social outcasts of the school, Welly (a practical, good natured 11yr old boy) and Heather (an out-going, animal loving 11yr old girl with a zest for adventure) befriend Earl (a mysterious loner who was found wandering around at the age of seven, parentless and talking jibberish, and was taken in by the school, now 14yrs old), they begin to realize that there is something strange about him (Earl). He has painful nightmares of faces from his past, he has strang abilities to escape from danger, like fighting teqyinces that he was never taught, and the ability to make himself very hidden whin he does not want to be seen. During their friendshep, as the strangeness begins to increace, and Earl is involved in a strange ordeal out in the snow, nearly killing him, his friends begin to worry. They swear to do anything they can to help, so when a woman comes to claim Earl as her long lost nephew, they help him to escape. He can feel the woman's evil nature, and somehow knows she is negativley associated with his past. Then, all becomes clear when Earl regains his memory and identity in a near-fatal acadent, awakening an ancient legend. He, Welly and Heather embark on a quest acrost the ruined plains to find the one person who can unite Britian and bring it out of the dark ages. All the while, long silent magic and an ancient evil are begining to creap back into the world. A world transitioning into an age of magic.

A really simple, but incredibly wonderful book

500 yrs After the devistation (the term used in the book for the day all of civioization and almost all life was wiped out by neuclear war) England is the last place wher civil, non-mutated people survive, though they are divided into small, squabling Earldoms. The sky, darkened by the devestation (lots of the sun's heat and light are blocked out) is only just begining to clear, the weather only just begining to come out of it's eternal winter. Landolyn (one of the few remaning shchools, where privelaged children are sent to get an education) is the place where Welly (a good-natured boy who wishes to be a warior, but believes his impared vision and chubbyness will never allow him to achieve his dream)and Heather (a brave, kind hearted animal-loving girl, who craves adventure and atention, but finds it only in the old, pre-devestation books she so often reads) go to school. Even though their differences are numerous, they are close freinds, due to the fact that they are both outcasts amongst the other children. Heather loves to lead them on great 'adventures', mostly based on old fiction works (like the sherlock holmes novels) which she believes to be historical documentations. In one of these adventures, she acadentaly leads herself and welly into a position of mortal danger, from which they are saved by Earl, an misterious older student who was taken in by the school when found wandering aimlessly around at the age of seven, talking jibberish, and having no recoliction of his past. Being a loner himself, he is brought into the friendship of Welly and Heather through a series of binding events, though he still profers sloitude sometimes. Soon, strange things start happening to Earl, his nightmares from his past, which he has had throughout his life, intensify, along with other numerous incidents, one of which almost kills him. Welly and Heather are concerned, and offer to help him in any way they can. So, when a strange, evil woman comes to claim Earl as her long-lost neice, Welly and Heather help him to escape. Soon, through a turn of events, they realize that they will never be able to return to Landoylen, and so when Earl regains his memory and identity, uncoverig a long lost time in history, they acompany him on his quest to bring back the one man who can unite the squabling Earldoms and bring England out of the dark ages. But an ancient enemy of Earls will go to all means to stop them.

A great choice for fantasy lovers!

"Winter of Magic's Return" tells the story of two outcasts- Welly and Heather- who seek friendship in the strange Earl Bedwas, a 14 year old foundling who mysteriously appeared in the ruins of a town at the age of 7. Found babbling in a strange language, he was taken in by the masters of Llandoylan school where he learned to speak the language and forget his strange past. But after a series of bizarre dreams, and a visit from an obviously evil "aunt," Earl and his only friends must escape. However, the real adventure begins when Earl realizes his past, and learns what the three of the must do to save their ruined world.
