An exciting complex detailed hi-tech thriller

I picked this book up on a charity stall - it cost me 40 Irish pence ( about 60 cents). It was written at the start of the 80's so its a little dated in some respects but that does'nt take away for its rich characters and vivid details and some spectacular set pieces. Its essentialy about a Russian plan to steal details of the American super computer that "controls" a network of highly trained agents across the world. But its more than that and there are several sub-plots that all tie into it intricate plot. I'm not an avid book reader but this one kept me hooked the entire time. And with all the sub-par novels made into movies in the last two decades how did this one slip through the net ??
