I admit, the first time I read this I almost shed a tear. It's a story about a girl's unusually strong bond with a remote island, its untamed wildlife, and, especially, a herd of wild horses that struggle to survive through a very harsh winter. What stronger bond is there than between a young girl and a horse? The girl maintains hope and kindness in the face of desperation and uncertainty, and through her we reminisce about a simpler and purer time when we held reverent the wild and powerful elements of nature around us. The artwork is amazing throughout. I wish I could get prints of some of the illustrations.
