Very Interesting Book

Although the book is billed as a thriller on the cover, I would say that is shortchanging the book. The author really spent a lot of time developing a feel for the book in Asia, you could really see each street seen. The book is much more of a mystery with a great, wide cast of characters that all get a good amount of time. A good amount of politics is intermixed through out the book. This is a smart book, but one that does not lend its self to a fast read. Sit down and take the time to really enjoy this book.
Memorable

Mystery w/ political intrigue; intense character development

Post Red Guard China during the mid 1980's sets the scene for rich, tense character development. This is not an ordinary mystery but one that displays a sensitive understanding of the political dangers of evolving China while displaying the same sensitivity for flesh and blood characters living in an era where decisions made to pursue truth put them and those they love in real danger. Each step in the process of pursing the truth compromises their ability to protect each other but a disregard for the old "standard of comfort" forces them to make choices to live their deep rooted convictions. I was surprised throughout the book because of the willingness of the author to develop characters who are brought to life as people of authenticity; these are people we can identify with and who make decisions that shame us or scare us or thrill us. All of this character development is done in a political and social milieu that reminds us that political settings are determined by little decisions on a daily basis but the cumulative effect of these decisions have enormous impact over time. This is a must read for those seeking an intelligent mystery that is not afraid to probe real human conditions and feelings.
