She was stranded on the windswept lake... with a desperate killer!

"You'd better buy a round-trip ticket, girlie. Nobody stays at Blackbriar Bay." Anna McKenzie had promised her dying father that she'd take her young brother away from the rough gold mining camp near Carson City and seek sanctuary with her aunt on the shore of Lake Tahoe. An orphan now, and destitute, Anna was filled with foreboding about the sister her father had mentioned only on his deathbed. Whenthe schooner Tahoe reached the remote cove, and Anna looked up at the huge, barnlike house perched on the cliffs high above the lake, her fears grew. The ster, eccentric woman who claimed to be her aunt behaved erratically. . . then threateningly. . .and with a secrecy that aroused Anna's suspicions. But the more Anna learned about the strange midnight visitor, the furtive whispers in the shadowy house, and the older woman's dark ambitions and even darker secrets, the more danger she was in. Even the protective attentions of handsome Lyle Delany couldn't keep Anna safe, for he too was being watched . . . then followed . . . then stalked. And if the schooner did not stop at Blackbriar Bay soon, there would be no escape for either of them. . . for the lake was wide and deep . . . Excerpt:From girl to woman. Delany managed to bring a jaw-cracking blow against the side of the black-bearded man's face. Then suddenly my attacker was running through the trees. I stook unsteadily as Delany turned to me. "You all right, Anna?" Suddenly I was in his arms, sobbing and trembling, and pressing my cheek against his chest. His arms cradled me with a gentleness I wouldn't have thought possible. I could feel the rapid rise and fall of his breathing. The strong, firm length of his body pressed against mine was the sweetest warmth that I had ever felt. I seemed to change as he held me, a bewildering metamorphosis from a timid girl into a woman with frightening desires. "I'm sorry," I whispered. "I should have listened to you." His lips touched my forehead in a whispery kiss. "It's all right, Tiger," he said. "Everything's all right." And at the moment, for one brief instant in time, I believed him.
