Beautifully Written

The Weight of Love is a superbly written novel. Herman writes with an elegant craft reminiscent of the prose of F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story is wonderful and heartbreakingly real as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story AND excellent writing.

what a treasure !

I found this book a few years ago in a [type of] store. At the time I was a full-time college student working two part-time jobs. I would read a few pages of the book on my breaks. It took me a while to get through it, but It was so worth it. From the moment the book opens until the end you are hooked. You feel for the main character deeply. Somehow, you know what he is going through. You know he has a good job and a great family, with the perfect this and the perfect that...but somehow there is something missing. And it brings that thought to mind, that one thing (or one person for that matter) cannot fulfill all your needs.I implore you to obtain a copy of this book - buy it used ..., if you don't like it, donate to your local libray...

First rate

i found a copy of this book discarded on a street in san francisco. i picked it up because i felt like reading something on the train. Glad I did. The book is beautifully written - particularly the central section dealing with Smith's affair with Helene. The synopsis description of this women as a French countess makes her sound ridiculous - like something out of a Disney film; in fact, her characterisation is first rate. The dialogue throughout is smart. The writing reminded me occasionally of Cormac McCarthy (these recurrent ands) and Flaubert - something in the easy, simple flow of words. It makes you wonder how many good books go relatively unnoticed like this one, discarded at the side the street. I would recommend it, although not buy it at this price.
