This book uses each month (except December) of 1963 as a chapter in MacNeil's review of the year. Though there are some short quotes throughout the book, the events and mindsets of 1963 are mostly revealed by photographs and their accompanying captions, some of which are quotes by those in, or in some way involved with, the events shown in the photos. For example, a Peace Corps volunteer, an Army Private, a Presidential aide, and others who lived the experience. The introduction should be read aloud in every US high school history course. It isn't a dry review of dates and the names of Presidents and Kings, it conveys a feeling, it helps explain why now is different from then. Just covering the events and ideas in the introduction would make an entire--very interesting--class in itself.
