A Southern family comes of age in the wake of the Vietnam War and their soldier father's absence, and come to terms with the changes in him and in themselves upon his return. Original. Movie tie-in.
".... no matter how much people think they understand war, war will never understand people. It's like a big machine that don't nobody really know how to work it- and once it gets out of hand, it winds up wreakin'all the things you thought you were fightin' for, and a whole bunch of other good things you sort of forgot you had."-- Elvadine speaking of her father. The War is a heart touching novel. It taught me a very valuable lesson in life. You go out and fight for you country. When you come back, you expect (at least as a soldier) a little more than when you left but instead... NOTHING. People can be very inconsiderate about soldiers going through tough times in wars, even it it was just Vietnam. Evaline's father had a hard time finding a job when he returned from Vietnam because he lost his job when he was gone. He was also stuck with lots of war memories really affected his behavior. People think they thoroughly understand war but they don't. This quote I chose explains how I interpreted the whole novel. Fighting does not solve problems, it only makes matters worse.
