Start at A, end at Z - an encyclopedia worth reading.

This book was essential to helping me know what's what in the ethnic grocery stores I haunt. It's organized as an encyclopedia, so I started at A and finished at Z. Every time I found an ingredient that intrigued me, I'd be off looking for it: fresh turmeric (wow); asafetida (aggh); cardamon (mmm); sea slugs (don't ask). The book was a huge undertaking and I'll forgive a few errors, like the statement that American pine nuts (pinon nuts) are too small to bother with and inferior to the larger Chinese variety. Most pine nuts I see in the store are smaller than the average pinon nut. If you can find fresh pinon nuts, they are one of the best things to eat(.)Every pioneer will come back with some inaccurate impressions. I salute the author, and regret that the book has gone out of print. Find it. Read it.
