Almost monk and almost nun find romance

Sir Alexander is returning to England after three long years. He left after his beloved son and wife died. He has a mission. He is to safeguard a holy relic and give it to the kinsmen of a fallen knight. After his mission he fully intends to take up vows and become a monk as he can never see himself loving another woman. His mission goes awry when he stumbles upon a grisly accident and murder scene. Lucy Kendell has been put into an abbey by her cousins. She is lame and when she was put there ten years earlier, the family never believed she would live. She is traveling with a party from the abbey to a new convent. Their mission is to make ready a new building for the rest of the abbey. She has no desire to become a nun and is the only survivor of a band of brigands. Sir Alex finds Lucy and seeks to protect her until they can get to the next village. Lucy is extremely grateful for the assistance but can instantly sense that Alex is uncomfortable with her. Repeatedly she attempts to go it alone and Alex at times allows her to do so only to see that she has little ability to protect herself from unscrupulous people. Alex is fighting his attraction for Lucy constantly. She is so young and beautiful and that it makes it hard for him to remember his promise to become a monk. This is a sweetly unfolding story. These two do not rush into an intimate situation but rather their feelings grow slowly and romantically. Lucy is kind, straightforward and wants only to have a life outside the convent with a husband and children. Alex is strongly holding onto his vows. These two are at cross purposes. Threaded throughout the novel is the quest to deliver the relic and danger from those who would do anything to steal it. This, however, never overshadows the romance of the Knight and Lucy.

Outstanding...

This book is one of those rare romances where you'll always remember the hero and heroine; what they went through and how much in love they were. Alex was so handsome, sexy, and adorable, without a weak bone in his body. A very tough warrior, yet gentle of heart. The perfect hero, in my opinion. Lucy was very lovely and sweet. She was also brave and intelligent. How refreshing. Although Lucy constantly found herself in precarious situations and Alex always came to her rescue, it wasn't overdone and each time it was believable, probably because they were such serious encounters. But one thing bothered me (it's trivial, I know)- Did they ever once take a bath? I don't think they did.
