I teach a one-semester thematic English class for high school juniors titled The Literature of the Vietnam War. Although it's not a history course, the students must have some background knowledge of the war before they read the literature. With only 88 pages, this book is a quick and easy read for my students who were not alive during the war. In fact, some of their parents weren't even born until the 70s. After reading this book, my students have the necessary framework to read and understand the significance of works by Tim O'brien, Michael Herr, and others. The book covers history from 1945 until 1975. The maps and pictures are very good. My students especially like the map showing selected events of the Vietnam War. This book provides the scaffolding that my students need to enhance their understanding of the literature.
