A thoroughly enjoyable and fun book. Frankow does an outstanding job of transporting the reader to an insider's realm of New Orleans by providing a rich sense of place - it's clear he knows the city well, and that makes this story all the more convincing. The story itself is full of wit, suspense, action, and a touch of romance that's all woven together beautifully. And at the heart of the tale is a unique new twist on the ancient battle between what-we-think-is-good and evil. Recommended read.
G.L. Giles' review of Jon Frankow's The Vampire Genesis
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
Set primarily in the rich, multilayered city of New Orleans, this novel skillfully blends science fiction, fantasy and horror into a book that's hard to put down. Furthermore, Frankow's thorough knowledge of Wiccan, Pagan, Christian (specifically the Roman Catholic branch) and Essene religions is apparent, as well as his ability to turn them on their heads. Moreover, the storyline is filled with shapeshifting surprises and transmogrific twists as one can't be sure of either what species a character truly is or whether they are a hero/sheroe or villain/villainess. At the end, I was left wanting more, so I eagerly await the next book in his Vampire Series... G.L. Giles, Author of V2:B4 (The Vampire Vignettes Prequel) and V3 (The Vampire Vignettes ReVamped)
HOLY CRAP!!! You've Gotta Read This Book

I read Jon Frankow's first book, The Splintered Damned, as a lark, a birthday present given to me since his last name is similar to my own. It was edgy and beautiful and left me wanting more. Well, I got what I wanted with his new book, The Vampire Genesis, and I still want more...more...more! The Vampire Genesis has a quality cast of rich well woven, and deeply involving characters, is set in my favorite city, (New Orleans) and has an air of a future classic in its genre. Frankow's take on vampires is utterly unique and will leave you feeling deeply satisfied...and more than a little disturbed. I am a Catholic, and his research on the history of the religion is impressive and presented in a thoroughly believeable format that made a lump catch in my throat as he tied things together, a little to neatly. No spoiler here, I'll stop on this aspect. Frankow's writing is vastly improved from his excellent maiden voyage of The Splintered Damned. He is sharper, edgier, wittier, and as my father would have said, "slick as snot on a doorknob." (That's actually a good thing.) It is a spec. fic. book I would place Frankow's Archer Sweet series in the same strata as Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Underworld. It is also strongly reminicent of Laurell K. Hamilton's early Anita Blake series. If he was a Recognized Author at last year's Independent Publisher's Book Awards (IPPY...whatever that means) with his debut The Splintered Damned, then The Vampire Genesis is sure to win Best In Show in 2007! Archer Sweet is a force of nature and the only reason Frankow is not on the best seller list is lack of exposure. (Shameless Plug Alert!) Pick up The Vampire Genesis if you like a good vampire tale, if you like fast-paced, can't put it down thrills, and a taste of romance. I tell my friends this book is a mix between Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code and classic Anne Rice if she weren't so long winded. BRAVO! I hope there is another book and soon!!!!
