Book Overview

Many in this generation are attracted to meditation, but quickly give up after wrestling with the obstacles that seem to block their path. After many years on his own spiritual journey, Don Rosenthal had this surprising epiphany: the obstacles are the path. This is the remarkably personal story of one man's spiritual awakening. The Uncharted Journey will help readers find the courage to find their own way to an examined life and an open heart. This...

A Rare And Wondrous Book

The Uncharted Journey is quite simply one of those rare and wondrous books with the power to change lives. Don Rosenthal is a profoundly courageous truth seeker, and wise and humble truth teller. His words are a transmission, bypassing the ego and speaking directly to the heart and soul. I have ADHD. This makes it virtually impossible for me to finish almost any "self-help" book. Most have a point, or a point per chapter, and reiterate it throughout. In contrast, The Uncharted Journey is packed with a dazzling array of exquisitely crafted points, one after another, threaded together like a finely woven tapestry. Reading it is a gentle, pragmatic, heart and eye-opening experience. Only a handful of books can change your life. THIS ONE CAN! Buy it for yourself and for your treasured friends.

Clear, Masterful, & Compelling

This is my all-time favorite book. Need I say more? O.K., let me try to tell you why. The TOPIC (self-knowledge, self-mastery, self-compassion) seems akin to the very meaning of life, and something that has been oddly elusive over the years. The CONTENT, i.e. Don's ideas, seems to speak directly and personally to me, like an friendly cell phone call right from my higher power. But mainly it's the WRITING. Every sentence, every paragraph seems like a pearl of wisdom that should be on a wall poster with a beautiful picture. This is the kind of book where people like me who underline their favorite parts found myself underlining most of every page. I very much appreciate such quality prose, for in addition to being a doctor, I am also a book author. Clear, compelling, and delicious writing like this is (I can assure you) the result of enormous focus, caring, diligence, and love. Basically, this quality of expression is a gift to us. I can only compare it to my previous favorite writer, Sinclair Lewis, and he was a Nobel Prize winner. But now let me lastly consider USEFULNESS. One measure of a book is if it changes one's life for the better. This one certainly has done that for me. It has delightfully increased my happiness and peace of mind. How could one small book be so useful? Well, for instance, take the innocent-looking chapter called "Relationship." Somewhere mid-chapter Don says, "A blessing awaits me when I allow that my partner has something important to teach me. When I bless and honor my partner with all my being...I will reap nothing but grace." Sounded simple enough, so I decided to try it for a while. Wowie-Zowie! Just that one suggestion, and now my wife and I are enjoying our marriage more than ever. Thank you, Don Rosenthal. And there's like a zillion suggestions of that caliber tucked into every corner of this remarkable volume. I truly hope I have been able to give you a flavor of what could be in store for you. Who knows how much better things could be for any of us. But, that it is "uncharted" is for me the most exciting part. Good traveling, Richard Shames, M.D., Santa Rosa, California

A book of serious spiritual purpose

This book is written by an author of serious spiritual purpose for readers of serious spiritual purpose. Those who have sought comfort from life's sufferings by finding hopeful refuge in spiritual teachings and yet have been deeply disappointed by the painful incrementalism and obstacles to obtaining the sought after peace and equanimity to which those teachings pointed. By numerous personal and thought provoking examples of how the path toward freedom is not linear, and that the challenges inherent in this path are necessary and essential steps toward achieving meaningful understanding, compassion and humility, author Don Rosenthal has created not a road map, but rather a series of sign posts that resonate in their universality of the human experience in its desire to awaken. While the book often explores with insight and humor the nitty gritty of how the ego's twisted ideology operates to our detriment in our day to day experience, it is also brilliant in how it expresses with the gravitas of a spiritual warrior the insight that any path toward wisdom necessitates an appreciation and determination to dismantle the powerful psychological barriers to experiencing and expressing love in our ego ridden world. In fact, the book posits a seemingly unassailable truth that true enlightenment is a place where the practice of pure love and the attainment of true wisdom merge into one. I recommend this book because it has a quality -- a vibe. It is the kind of book you can reread many times, open anywhere, and find new meaning each time. Read it alone or with your partner, take it on vacation, smile, laugh, feel a sense of awe and recognition of words that can seem both familiar and newly penetrating at the same time. a psycho-spiritual page turner

from time to time i read a novel which i consider a page turner. it's never happened to me before reading this book to find a page turner in the psycho-spiritual realm. clearly rosenthal has paid his dues as a seeker and is sharing his precise understanding of the human condition. he does it with clarity and a keen sense of humor. i read most of this out loud to my wife while touring the high sierras and chapter by chapter we kept saying "yes, yes, yes." we recognized all of the games and strategies we play in our day to day communications. what a help this book has been in bringing more awareness to our unconscious behavioral patterns. i've been on a spiritual path for over 40 years, have read much literature on human relations and transpersonal psychology but this is far and away the best of the best.
