Very entertaining

As a 9 month old, my oldest would giggle at the illustrations and then flip the book over for us to read again and again. We had it memorized so if she became fussy on a long car ride we could use it to calm her down. Our whole family still enjoys this tale.

An engaging folk tale, well presented.

My toddler asks for this book almost every evening at bedtime, the repetitions getting a response similar to that gained from childrens' play songs like "B-I-N-G-O" or "Wheels on the Bus". My spouse finds the slavic names somewhat daunting, but I find that they ryhme along just fine. The inclusion of a "cast shot" as the last page of the story allows me to practice memory skills with my son, asking him the oft-repeated names so he can point to the characters. This tale has me looking with eagerness for other folk tale retellings to share with my children.

a great story that has a cumulative effect

Our 3 year old loved rhyming the names and re-reading the story to us. The illustrations embellished the words and stirred his imagination.
