The Truth Cookie by Claire

Have you ever heard of a magical cookbook? Have you ever heard of a woman who nickname is Minty? The Truth Cookie has that and the kitchen sink. There is so much in this book. If you like a little bit of tragedy in your books then wake up and smell the cookies (flowers) you have to read this book. For a long time it has just been Lulu and her dad since her mom died she has been sad. She has barely anything she can rely on since her mom's death. But when Varaminta le Bone, the author of How to Be as Thin as Me, moves in and starts dating her dad almost all that is going to be taken away from her. Her cooking, her housekeeper Aileen, her best friend Frenchy, and her dad are all going to be taken away. Torquil is evil he steals all the things that reminds Lulu of her mom. Then when her evil stepmother takes her out to an unwanted day of beauty she finds herself in Mr. O's shop. A mesmerizing shop in a little town called Angel. There she finds The Apple Star. A cookbook. That is not the weird part the weird part is it is inscribed to her from her mom. But another weird thing this way comes. It has things like camel's butter and Idzumo honey as ingredients. So she sets off on an unforgettable adventure to stop the lying of Varminta and Torquil. This book is kind of like the book The Witchcatcher. It is about a girl and her dad. Her dad falls in love with the worst woman in the world. You might even call her a witch. It's an exiting fantasy about the bonding of family when things get tough. This book is also kind of like Cinderella, the story. The characters are a lot of ways the same. In some stories of Cinderella the father is gone in others the father is dead. But I believe that both Cinderella and Lulu loved their fathers very much. Their stepmothers or soon-to-be-stepmothers are evil. They both don't love the father just like their power or money. That is how Varminta and Cinderella's mom are the same. The fairy godmother is like Cassandra and Mr. Otto Lunch (Mr. O) because they all want to protect their godchild or friends and they use magic to do it. Torquil is like the evil stepsisters because they want to ruin their stepsisters or step-sister-to-be's life. The Truth Cookie is a fun exiting adventure into a land where magic is reality and cookies can make evil step-people-to-be tell the truth.

Great book kids can relate to

THis was a really great book! I read it two times already! I like the fact that lots of kids can relate to Lousia. She just wants her dad to herself and she doesn't like Varenca. It's funny at the end... but I won't give it away! Go read this book!

A funny and exciting adventure about a girl trying to save her family with... cookies!

For a long time, it's just been 12-year-old Lulu, her dad, and their fun housekeeper Aileen. But then the evil stepmother-to-be moves into the picture and brings along her horrible son. When Lulu's dad is around, Varaminta and Torquil appear as polite and loving as anyone could hope for --- but when she's alone with them, Lulu experiences their true colors. Varaminta tears Lulu apart, rudely insults her, and instills a feeling of guilt in the pit of her stomach. Torquil is conniving, dishonest and downright mean. Lulu needs help, and fast, because soon her dad will marry this woman, and the situation will only get worse. Then, as Lulu escapes from an unwanted birthday makeover --- compliments of the insulting Varaminta --- she ducks into a strange and unusual bookstore. There she literally stumbles into a cookbook with an inscription that appears to be from her mother, who died seven years earlier. This is like no other cookbook that Lulu has ever seen. With recipes for falling in love and finding laughter, and one for a cookie that forces a person to tell the truth, Lulu begins to find hope that she can expose Varaminta and Torquil for who they really are. With the help of her good friend, Frenchy, Lulu sets out to locate all of the strange ingredients required to make the cookies, like crow's eggs and camel's butter. But can she get the goodies made in time? What a fun book this is! Fiona Dunbar does a superb job with the story. Readers will instantly bond with Lulu, cheering her on and loathing her future stepmother and stepbrother. Excitement builds as Lulu and Frenchy decode the clues to find the mysterious ingredient shop, pulling the reader through the pages quickly. The generous sprinkling of humorous puns just increases the fun. An added bonus is the promise of two more stories with Lulu, an entire Lulu Baker Trilogy. --- Reviewed by Chris Shanley-Dillman, author

The Truth Cookie

I've read the whole trilogy and thought it was brilliant. I really enjoyed Lulu and Aileen and her father, and the wonderful magical recipes. I thought Varaminta Le Bone, the villain, was both funny and awful. I couldn't put it down.
