This is one of my family's favorite stories. It tells the life story of a rescued harbor seal. A main point of the story is that as he ages, Corky develops cataracts and can not be cured. A thoughtful trainer modifies the blind seal's routines and environment so he can continue his productive and happy life as a zoo ambassador. This is an excellent example of how to respectfully and thoughtfully treat someone who has developed disabilities. The story can be used as a launching point for many varied discussions. It teaches by example the value and place of zoos, how to provide responsible care, how to problem-solve, how to modify environments for special needs people or animals, and demonstrates the value of each person or animal's contribution to our collective experience.
