Other than the scriptures, I would say this is the most important book a Latter-Day Saint could own. Joseph Smith definitely is The Prophet. I love the way Joseph Fielding Smith edited the book. It is presented in topics. For example, the book will give a topic heading of 'No Peace But in Zion,' and then it gives a the teachings The Prophet gave on this topic. The book is kind of a best of Joseph's teachings organized into topics and themes. Another point to make for those of you looking into buying this book, it isn't historic in nature, it is just the teachings of Joseph.

This book is excellent in every way in explaining and bringing to light just what Joseph Smith did really say and teach. This information is a big help to understanding the days ahead even if one is not Mormon.
Essential reading on Joseph's Discourses

This book, which basically outlines and details some of the Prophet Joseph Smith's major teachings, is a must have for any serious student of LDS history and the teachings of Joseph Smith. This book is outlined in four sections, correlating with the various time periods of Church history (i.e. New York, Kirtland, Missouri, Nauvoo). This is one factor of this volume that is beneficial, as you can see how Joseph's teachings and his own personality advanced and developed over time. This book was also good in that it devoted a section to Joseph's epic King Folett Discourse that is presented in a readable and lucid format. And with text and commentary from Joseph Fielding Smith, you get footnotes to further references and commentary on some select passages. So, really, this book is a must have for any student of Joseph Smith's teachings and LDS history.
Standard Work on Joseph Smith.

This book is the best treasure house of Joseph Smith's teachings. In fact, it is an unofficial source of theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It relies heavily on the rather bulky "History of the Church," but also has some documents that are not included in the official history. It is well organized, and these newer editions have the index compiled by Dr. Robert Matthews.
