Without getting too esoteric the material is well written though at times one is wanting more in the way of symbolic definitions.

This is by far the best book to learn the Rider Waite Tarot ! Well worth the price ! It is perfect for the beginner. Study this book daily with Your deck and You'll be on Your way to a basic understanding of the Tarot.

no frills tarot

This book inspired me to buy a Rider-Waite deck! I started learning tarot with non-traditional decks like Motherpeace and the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot, and I picked this book up to see what the old standby Rider-Waite was all about. Gray's simple, clear explanations shed new light on my readings with other decks, and the Rider-Waite illustrations convinced me that this deck merits its status as the "standard" for tarot. Gray explains the Minor Arcana in very useful detail, and the concise discussion of reversals was especially helpful to me. The information about how to do readings for other people is also quite practical. The section on the Majors seems a bit skeletal to me, but there's definitely enough to get you started.This is an all-over good read as well applicable to any tarot deck in a very general way.
