It's impossible, due to my enjoyment of his writing, to ever pass by a Lee Floren western, even when it is in LARGE PRINT. This 1987 western has as its protagonist one Jim Parker, Texas Ranger, working undercover to thwart dope smuggling, mainly heroin, coming across the Rio Grande close to the Circle N ranch. The Rio Grande runs close to 1500 miles in length so working this case would not be easy and as Jim Parker knew, a Ranger always rides alone. As the story develops we also see from the border town of Cardenas the Mexican Rurales, in particular Juan Ferdin, also have interest in the smuggling and cattle rustling taking place. The cattle are trailed across the Rio Grande, being ever alert to the quick sand of the river, over to the Mexican side to be traded to one Enrique de la Vega for saddle bags of illegal drugs. The drugs are then brought over the Rio Grande to the U.S. to be distributed and sold for great profit. The law in Cardenas is owned by the Circle N ranch so the ranch controls what happens near its boundaries, only to have the sheriff murdered with the killing blamed by eye witnesses on one Jim Parker! How will a Ranger who rides alone work this out? Well, with a little help from unexpected allies he does and also wins the hand of the Circle N owner, Clara Davis. Drugs, romance, and six guns on the border. It all adds up to an enjoyable read for lovers of westerns. Semper Fi, bookaroos.
