The sirens howl in the middle of a frigid, stormy night. While we lay secure and content in our beds, we are comforted to know that the roaring red machines are on their way to help save the life or the property of a neighbor. Even more, we are grateful for the men and women huddled in those trucks, who selflessly pulled themselves out of a deep sleep to answer a call to serve their community. These outstanding individuals volunteer to charge into life-threatening situations so that we may feel safer, 365 days a year. This is the story of the people and events that have made the Syosset Fire Department's first one hundred years an achievement well worth celebrating. It is a heartfelt tribute to the extraordinary citizens who founded Fire Company No. 1 in 1915, as well as the generations of equally exceptional volunteers who built the SFD into one of the region's most respected fire and emergency response organizations. Along the way, this story will hopefully provide a glimpse of the great work these brave and skilled first responders do every day, while the rest of us listen to the sirens wailing in the distance.
