I had begun this series more than a decade ago, and foolishly allowed the books to go out of print before collecting them all. Elizabeth Boyer is a great spinner of plot and character development, even if the writing does not immediately reach out and snatch away your attention. It was because of her characters and the storyline itself, that I began a search for all of her books, taking the better part of a decade to find them all. The initial pull of plot in this book is a bit different to the others, in that Boyer disproves one great myth...the pen is not greater than the sword, at least not when it comes to reading this book. The characters are well rounded, which makes it unfortunate that this book reads like a video game...bad plotting covered by good scenery.
The book that hooked me on fantasy fiction

I read this book almost twenty years ago for a book report. I was and still am a slow reader, and would lose interest in most books. The sword and the satchel changed my opinion of reading. It was fun and exicting. With this book E. Boyer helped me open up to an entirely different world of literiture. I had found a place where school work and day dreams could finally co-exhist.
A very intense book.

Ms. Boyer continues to write exquisite stories with great color and depth. If you haven't read anything by her fine it, check you local Librady, whatever. You will not be sorry you took the time. Kilgore is a great character.
