This is a fantastic, historically correct novel that will carry you, along with the author's very well developed characters, over a span of 3 decades, from childhood, into a war, through excruciatingly painful love triangles, evoking heartwrenching emotion in its readers before at last, tying all the many loose ends into a tidy bundle, at which time the reader will have been through the proverbial wringer with the characters. This book is equal in every way, if not superior to Mitchell's Gone with the Wind, and would still make a compelling movie, or Masterpiece Theater presentation. If this book doesn't get you hooked on English literature by Ms. Pearson, then your tastes must certainly differ from mine. I highly recommend this incredible piece of literature!

Enchanting, Spellbinding, Wonderful -- Couldn't put it down

It is hard to believe that there can be 127 used copies of this gem for sale starting at $.01. I bought mine at a library book sale after reading the first page. I don't normally read novels, but half-way through the book, I ordered every book by Diane Pearson I could find. I highly recommend it. Beautifully written!

A Glorious Summer with Every Human Passion!

In the summer of 1902 everything was so perfect in the tiny English village and then the Barshiskey's moved it and turned the next door neighbors, the Willoughby's, world upside down.Every minute is enjoyable, from the domestic intrigue in the village's fanciest homes to a frenzied love affair in St Petersberg, from idyllic afternoons in Tyler's Meadow to frozen, frightened nights in Quaker camps devoted to the Russian poor, from its splendid beginning to a happy ending you will savor every minute of it, just as I did.

Enjoyable

A really enjoyable read. Lots of vivid descriptions of places. A favourite.
