Should be required reading of all American and French elementary school children

This is a book that all elementary school children in France and the United States should read and understand. One of our greatest national treasures is the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. A gift from the people of France, it was originally designed to be a permanent reminder that French soldiers and sailors fought alongside American patriots when the American colonies revolted against the British. Without that assistance, it is likely that the movement to independence would have failed. Few contemporary people realize how much of a technical challenge the creation of the statue was in the late nineteenth century. At the time, it was the largest statue ever created, and it had to be constructed in parts, shipped across the Atlantic and then assembled on the island where it resides. With the value and efficiency of hindsight, it is difficult for the modern person to comprehend that many people in the United States rebelled at the thought of paying for even the base for the statue. In many ways, the greatest national symbol of the United States is the Statue of Liberty, a shining beacon designed to represent the United States as a land of opportunity. This is a worthy book where even adults can profit from reading it.

Good information in troubles times

Good for kids to understand the Statue of Liberty, how she came to stand as a beacon near New York City, why she is so important socially, culturally, and historically. A Must Have as parents seek to instill Love of Country and Patriotism in their young munchkins.
