A brief introduction to the powers of the Supreme Court
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
This Cornerstones of Freedom series looks at the "The Story of the Powers of the Supreme Court," and the title is a clue that this is not a chronological history of the high court. R. Conrad Stein jumps around from explaining how the Supreme Court works, to the importance of Marbury v. Madison, to notable cases involving slavery and segregation, to recent controversial cases. Fortunately this book has an index that can help young readers find things they are looking for, assuming, of course, that they know a little something about the Supreme Court in the first place, which would be somewhat ironic given that this book is intended to serve as an introduction to the topic. Given the massive history of the Supreme Court, it is not surprising that this volume tends to get superficial. For example, when listing "Some Notable Supreme Court Justices of the 20th Century," we are shown the first Jewish, African-American, and woman Supreme Court justices along with the one who served the longest. This juvenile history is illustrated with historic paintings and photographs to provide the intended introduction to the powers, justices and cases that have made history.
