Book Overview

When it comes to supernatural intrigue, nobody does it better than New York Times bestselling author Simon R. Green. Eddie Drood, at your service. For generations my family has been keeping humanity safe from the wicked, the nasty, and the generally not-nice inhuman predators who feed on people's fear and misery. No one kicks evil arse better than us Droods--especially yours truly. In fact, my arse-kicking skills have come to the attention of the...

Best of the Secret Histories Series

Less Drood politics and more spy "who can I trust" tension and even Walker from the Nightside series puts in an appearance. A great book, I still prefer his Nightside series (and the old Hawk and Fisher) but the book doesn't disappoint and is the best of the secret histories (I'm still reading the 4th book).

A New Series but some familar characters

The legendary Independent Agent is dying ...so who will inherit his hoard of secret information and fabulous secrets? For most of the last century, he was the greatest spy in the world, but now The Independent Agent is retiring, he has decided on one last great game - the six greatest spies in the world today must work together - and compete against each other - to solve the six greatest mysteries in the world. Whoever wins the game will also win The Agent's priceless treasure-trove of information. Eddie Drood, aka Shaman Bond, has been invited to join the great game, and of course he can't say no, especially when he learns what the mysteries are - everything from the Tunguska Incident to the Philadelphia Experiment, to whatever the hell it was really happened at Roswell. But that means he needs to survive working alongside old friends and old enemies ...especially when the spies start dying, one by one ...And one of them is going to haunt him ...for the rest of his life. I know I said I was gonna do a series of posts on eBooks- I am! BUT I had to get through this review first, just because it was an INCREDIBLE book. If you have not a read a Simon R. Green stop reading now and go buy one. Definitely at the pinnacle of hard core, gritty, detective (usually) driven horror, all of Green's books are fantastic. Being the latest book in Green's new series, this one picks up with our main character - Eddie Drood - being strong armed into taking part in a contest where secrets are the prize. Teleported all over the world to figure out some of its greatest mysteries, Drood and Co. lose people and more along the way. It is a prime example of the vivid and spectacular character plus world building that Green can do, with some of the horrors that this team has to face ones that I wouldn't have been able to imagine before this book. Overall Feeling - Thumbs up. An incredible addition to a series that I don't want to see end - GO READ IT! NOW! Series - 1) The Man with the Golden Torc 2) Daemons are Forever 3) The Spy Who Haunted Me Reading Amidst the Chaos - [...]

Sustained applause with cries of "encore" !!!

Pick a superlative. Any and all would fit. It's as if Owen Deathstalker lives again. I read Mr. Green's works for the ageless wisdom cleverly hidden between the lines. Sure, there's great humour, suspense, believable whackiness but... All indicators are that HE MUST KNOW how to BE an archetypical Druid...not a latter day tree hugger by any means...but one who operates from the depth of knowing and chillingly does the right thing in the Good Fight. (Sorry to blow your cover mate, but it's rather obvious if one has a good think about it.) Now I too want a coffee mug with the legend printed on the side: "WORLD'S BEST MOTHER-----r" Cheers

Love it!!

I have read all of Green's nightside series and am now reading the Secret Histories series. I keep waiting to be disappointed because I always feel like he cannot top his previous works. Thankfully Green continues to prove me wrong!! I loved this book and I especially loved the introduction and inclusion of other characters outside of the Drood family and Molly Metcalf. Possible Spoilers: I loved having Walker in this book! I think it was a great piece of character development and I actually would really like a book devoted entirely to Walker and his story and futre. I loved the book and I also appreciated that it was released on the Kindle.

superb investigative urban fantasy

The dedicated Drood family understands their mission is to protect mankind from paranormal assaults. However, there appears to be a traitor amidst the Drood brood; shaking the family to its core as none has ever betrayed the trust. Eddie "Shaman Bond" Drood vows to learn who the seditious agent is and the deadly duplicity one way or another. However, Eddie is forced to put aside his personal quest as the fabled Arthur King is dying without an heir; forcing Eddie and several other agents to try to solve the King's riddles. Revealing five of humanity's most puzzling mysteries will lead to uncovering the King's secrets and to his surprise help identify the traitor. The quests take Eddie and his intrepid team to some of the more famous mysterious locales like Roswell. However, the key to this superb investigative urban fantasy is the choices Eddie must make between resolving his family's needs and saving mankind from destruction. The mystery subplot is clever and fun to follow as that is the avenue Eddie travels in unlocking the King's secrets, but the stops along the way in which he is forced into several Hobson Choices make Simon R. Green's latest Brood crew thriller (see THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN TORC and DAEMONS ARE FOREVER) an excellent adventure. Harriet Klausner
